I read an interesting article today on the importance of a global collective for threat intelligence. As I read the article, I realized we have all the technology in place, but it may not be utilized to its fullest. I assume that this is one of two things. First, it could be a legacy mindset that any intel would be best used for an organization’s competitive advantage. While this is a possible reason, a more plausible reason could be education and training. While having a robust system such as STIX and TAXII has solved the technology part, we have not done enough in the community to help organizations large and small leverage this technology to effectively share data. We need to help these organizations utilize the available intel. Obtaining this intel and utilizing it will need to be a priority since a collective of intelligence data that is not able to be distributed and analyzed is nothing more than wasted disk space.
